6.00 AM - Wake up

Happy Thursday! Thursday is my favourite day of the work week, and I’m excited to document it to show you exactly why. Starting off, I wake up at 6 am and make my way to the gym.

8.30 AM - Arrive at the office 

I catch a bus into the Auckland CBD and take a quick walk into the office. Straight away I make myself a coffee and some breakfast in our kitchen – this is my routine every day. I get my workday started by checking any Slack messages or emails and picking up where I left off yesterday.

9.00 AM - All hands

Today we have our Movio wide meeting, most of us are in the office today but many are online too. We have offices in the US and UK so it’s a nice chance to catch up with them as well. We are getting an update from the product team today on progress of one of our new products being developed.

9.30 AM - Stand up

Each morning my team meets, we talk about our progress from the day before, our plan for the day and any help we may need for our work. This is also a great time for a social catch up and another coffee.

9.45 AM - Work

Now it’s time to sit down and get to work. I am a back-end engineer and work with Golang. I really try to focus and get through as much of my work as possible at this point, but I also take the time to have quick chats with the others around me about what ever topic floats around – this may or may not be technical related.

12.00 PM - Lunch

Twelve o’clock on the dot we go for lunch. Around our office we have amazing options lunch. This is a really fun hour to just relax and have a laugh with friends. Often, we will walk down to Commercial Bay and have lunch there as a team – but today most of us stayed in.

1.00 PM - Work

Back to work. I spend the next couple of hours focused on my work, just trying to achieve as much as I can. This is usually coding in Go, commonly working with GraphQL and PostgreSQL.

This certainly isn’t alone time though, I have a few conversations with friends, head to the kitchen for a hot drink, take a break on the bean bags and step outside for some fresh air too.

I have a progress meeting with the CTO and my team about the project we are working on – all is going great!

3.30 PM - Dev Forum

Each Thursday the engineers gather, and we have a presentation or two about a technical project, idea or concept. Today we have our engineering manager showing us a new tool to help with technical test submissions for the hiring process. We also have the CTO doing a talk about and new database system he quite liked - it’s not something we’re going to use but thought it was interesting and wanted to show us. This is a great time for everyone to learn about new ideas and concepts in a relaxed and informative way.

4.00 PM - Thursday drinks

And now it’s time to really relax and grab a drink and socialise with everyone. Movio puts on a great spread of drinks and nibbles for all to enjoy. It’s the perfect opportunity to unwind the week and maybe play a game or two of pool.

5.00 PM - Home

Usually, I would leave the office a bit earlier, but I’m always keen to stay for social drinks on a Thursday. So, at 5pm I make my way back home on the bus.
